The Yuan Pro DM-i is a compact plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUV developed under BYD’s globalisation strategy. Unlike the fully electric Yuan Pro sold in China, this model is an export-only strategic offering not available in its domestic market. On 10 April 2026, the Yuan Pro DM-i made its global debut in Mexico before an audience of over 300 media representatives and business partners, marking a further expansion of BYD’s product lineup across Latin America. In the Mexican market, the Yuan Pro DM-i is positioned as an upmarket compact SUV targeting the country's fastest-growing new energy vehicle (NEV) SUV segment, where key rivals include mainstream ICE contenders like the Toyota Corolla Cross. In terms of dimensions, the Yuan Pro DM-i measures 4,330 mm in length, 1,830 mm in width, and 1,675 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,620 mm, powered by a plug-in hybrid powertrain combining a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine with an electric motor.
The Yuan Pro DM-i carries forward the signature "Dragon Face" design philosophy from BYD’s Dynasty series. Up front, a closed-off grille is flanked by a prominent full-width chrome trim strip with the central "BYD" badge, complemented by "Consummate Ring" dragon-crystal LED headlights whose rounded, sleek profile balances nighttime illumination performance with strong visual recognition. Along the sides, the profile is clean and compact, sporting semi-recessed door handles that help reduce aerodynamic drag while adding a touch of modern tech appeal. At the rear, the "Lucky Ring" full-width LED taillight cluster mirrors the front styling, delivering high brand distinctiveness. Within its compact footprint, the overall exterior exudes a stylish, youthful yet mature aesthetic. Inside, the cabin adopts the Yuanqi wrap-around design theme, accented by a clean, minimalist high-tech vibe, complete with a standard 3D transparent 360-degree camera system for clear all-round visibility. Extensive soft-touch upholstery combined with a light-tone colour palette creates an inviting, youthful cabin environment.
At the heart of the Yuan Pro DM-i is BYD's acclaimed DM-i super hybrid system. The powertrain comprises a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor. Operating on the Atkinson cycle to maximise thermal efficiency, the petrol unit delivers 72 kW (approx. 98 PS) and 122 Nm of torque; meanwhile, the front electric motor generates 145 kW (approx. 197 PS) and 300 Nm of torque, yielding a total system output that outclasses similarly priced conventional ICE SUVs. Power is channelled to the front wheels via an electronic continuously variable transmission (E-CVT), ensuring seamless power delivery. The vehicle adopts a front-wheel-drive (FWD) setup.
Energy is stored in a 7.85 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) Blade Battery, delivering an NEDC-rated pure electric range of approximately 45 km. With a full tank and full charge, the combined NEDC cruising range reaches up to 1,045 km with an average fuel consumption of around 1.5 L/100 km, offering ultra-low running costs alongside zero range anxiety. In terms of performance, it completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in 9.1 seconds on its way to a top speed of 180 km/h, offering plenty of punch for both city commutes and highway cruising. Underneath, the Yuan Pro DM-i rides on a front MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam suspension setup tuned for comfort, striking a sensible balance between ride refinement and cabin packaging efficiency.
Built on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0, the Yuan Pro DM-i benefits from advanced lightweight engineering and modular integration. It comes standard with an 8-in-1 electric powertrain that integrates key high-voltage components—including the drive motor, reducer, and motor controller—into a compact module, thereby reducing overall powertrain mass and power consumption. The SUV also incorporates Cell-to-Body (CTB) battery integration technology, which integrates the battery pack directly into the body shell to maximise cabin room while enhancing structural rigidity, handling stability, and NVH suppression. A tight turning radius of just 5.25 metres makes manoeuvring through tight urban streets and tight parking spaces remarkably effortless. The vehicle is also equipped with precision parking sensors and a remote parking control feature, allowing drivers to manoeuvre the car from outside in tight spots. In addition, the Yuan Pro DM-i comes standard with a wide-temperature-range heat pump system, helping lower tested energy consumption to as little as 12 kWh/100 km and highlighting the high efficiency of its electric drive system.
The Yuan Pro DM-i offers well-thought-out cabin packaging. The rear bench features a 60:40 split-folding design, allowing boot capacity to expand up to a generous 1,320 litres to accommodate bulky luggage and family gear. The rear middle seat includes a dedicated headrest to ensure decent comfort for three abreast. Configured strictly as a five-seater, the cabin provides adequate legroom across both rows even with a full complement of passengers.
On the tech front, the Yuan Pro DM-i comes standard across the board with a 3D transparent 360-degree camera system that renders a full virtual view of the car's surroundings on the central touchscreen, virtually eliminating blind spots during tight manoeuvres and parking. Infotainment is handled by BYD's proprietary DiLink smart connectivity system, which supports 4G LTE connectivity and over-the-air (OTA) software updates for continuous functionality enhancements. Convenience amenities include automatic climate control and synthetic leather upholstery, prioritising everyday practicality for daily commutes and family duties; however, in terms of UI refinement and premium material execution, it remains a step behind BYD’s higher-end bespoke EV offerings.
On the safety front, the Yuan Pro DM-i features a high-strength cage body structure with hot-stamped steel reinforcement in critical crash zones for enhanced impact absorption. Standard passive safety equipment includes front dual airbags and front side airbags, as well as rear ISOFIX child seat anchor points, providing solid baseline crash protection.
In terms of active safety and driver assistance, the Yuan Pro DM-i is equipped as standard with precision parking sensors and a reverse camera system for basic parking assistance. Higher-spec grades also gain a remote parking control feature, enabling owners to manoeuvre the car at low speeds via remote key fob from outside—especially handy when dealing with tight parking bays. However, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are noticeably absent; it lacks Level 2 driver aids such as full-speed adaptive cruise control (ACC) and autonomous emergency braking (AEB), with the basic setup chosen primarily to maintain price competitiveness.
The Yuan Pro DM-i is currently available exclusively in Mexico, with no immediate plans for a domestic Chinese release. Jorge Vallejo, Passenger Vehicle Sales Director of BYD Mexico, highlighted that the model's debut underscores BYD's long-term commitment to Latin America, with plans to introduce further electrified models to broaden local consumer choice. Picking Mexico for its global debut not only leverages favourable policy incentives for electrified vehicles in the region, but also reflects BYD’s strategy of pushing downstream now that its brand presence has been established. As a compact PHEV SUV, the Yuan Pro DM-i directly targets buyers looking to make the leap from conventional petrol SUVs to electrified motoring, with its 1,045 km total range and frugal fuel economy offering substantial savings in running costs over ICE rivals.
Nevertheless, the Yuan Pro DM-i faces notable market hurdles. In China, its electric counterpart (Yuan Pro EV) struggled with monthly sales lingering around three to low-four digits between 2024 and 2025, drawing criticism for a firm ride, average soundproofing, and a plasticky interior. To succeed abroad, the DM-i version must address these shortcomings by delivering improvements in suspension comfort, material tactile quality, and active safety kit to match overseas buyers' expectations on refinement and value. Serving as a key piece in BYD's dual-track "PHEV and BEV" global push, the Yuan Pro DM-i leverages DM-i hybrid tech, compact dimensions, and sensible practicality to carve out a foothold in overseas PHEV segments.
